Epithelial cells lining the intestinal and airway tracts play a crucial role in regulating luminal pH, which is essential for maintaining tissue homeostasis, protecting against damage, and supporting proper physiological functions such as digestion, absorption, and host defense. In the intestine, epithelial cells modulate luminal acidity through coordinated acid and base secretion via specialized ion transporters on their apical and basolateral membranes. Likewise, airway epithelial cells tightly control the pH of the airway surface liquid to optimize mucociliary clearance, antimicrobial activity, and overall lung health.
