The Low Volume System is used to study transport in tissues where the net quantity transported is low or the assay for the transported solute requires higher concentrations. This system, like the system for Snapwell culture inserts above, permits a variety of tissue sizes to be mounted in a low volume chamber.

The system includes the basic EasyMount system described above, P2400 low volume chambers (working volume 0.8 ml to 5 ml per chamber half) and choice of holders for mounting tissue samples (1 per chamber). Several different holders are available for these chambers including those for small tissue samples such as human intestinal or nasal mucosal biopsy, mouse pup intestine, cornea, etc. as well as tissues up to 0.71 cm2 (9.5 mm diameter). Special holders can be made to accommodate your specific tissue. P2400 series sliders are to be purchased separately from system.

Up close with our Ussing Chamber & Stand Anodized Aluminum Heat Block with Cradles Precision Acrylic Ussing Chamber with Electrodes Chamber Caps & Adjustable Air Valves deal gas lift circulation Used to measure the net ion transport taking place across the epithelium A voltage is generated across the epithelium as a consequence of ion selective channels in the membranes and active transport. This voltage is sensed by the black Ag/AgCl electrodes and measured by the voltage clamp instrument. Current may be passed by the clamp instrument across the epithelium via the white electrodes. When this current is sufficient to exactly cancel the voltage generated by the epithelium, the epithelium is “short-circuited” and the current necessary to do this is the short-circuit current (Isc). When the solutions in the chamber compartments are the same, the Isc is a measure of the net active transport of ions across the epithelium.
